BJ Hernandez is a Basel based musician specializing in historical performance on the trombone. A versatile performer, he plays tenor and bass trombones in addition to other early brass instruments (natural trumpet, busine, slide trumpet etc.). He has two Masters degrees in Historical Performance from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and currently studies wind band conducting at the Musik Akademie Basel.

BJ appreciates the variety of colors and textures in different musical contexts and styles, and feels equally at home as a soloist, part of a vocal ensemble, or within an orchestra. BJ is a founding member of Vox Præterita, which focuses on 17th century instrumentalmusic. His group Flores y Canciones explores music traditions and their social context in 16th and 17th century New Spain. 

He has performed with such groups as Les Cornet Noirs, Capella Pratensis, I Fedeli, Washington Bach Consort, Weser Renaissance, Ensemble Phoenix Munich, Abendmusiken Basel, BernVocal, and Harmonia Stellarum Houston. He has performed in such festivals as Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht (NL), Laus Polyphoniae (BE), Aurore Helsinki (FI), Festival de Musique Improvisée de Lausanne (CH), Varaždin Baroque Festival (HR), Houston Early Music Festival (US), and Baroque Spring in Biržai (LT) .
